Description
A remarkable and exceptionally rare set: twelve knives and twelve matching forks with Worcester blue and white porcelain handles, housed in their original fish-skin-covered case. The knives measure 28.3cm with blades marked GR IEF RIS and unmarked silver collars; the forks 22cm. The fish skin case itself - 33cm high, fully intact - is as much an object as its contents, the kind of thing that arrives on a table and stops a room.
Hand-painted Worcester porcelain cutlery handles of this period are seldom found in complete sets, and rarer still in original cases. The blue and white decoration is characteristic of Worcester's finest 18th-century production, and the GR-marked blades confirm a date within the Georgian period. Condition is good throughout, with natural wear consistent with age. The porcelain handles show no notable cracks; one fork shows wear to its prongs, as noted.
This set was formerly in the collection of Peter Hone, designer, tastemaker, and one of the great private collectors of his generation. Pieces from his collection carry not only their own considerable history but the weight of his discernment.
A collector's piece in every sense.
Note: one fork shows wear to prongs, consistent with use and age. All porcelain handles are intact with no notable cracks.
