Description

A matched pair of 18th-century English wine glasses with wheel-etched decoration - a technique that involves cutting the design directly into the surface of the glass with a rotating wheel, giving the motifs their characteristic fine, matt finish against the polished body.

The etching depicts a naturalistic flowering vine with leaves and berries, running in a continuous band around the bowl. The stems are plain and tapering, drawn out to the pontil in the manner typical of mid-to-late 18th-century production. The glass has a slight grey tint and internal bubbles characteristic of pre-industrial manufacture.

Both glasses in excellent condition, no chips or cracks. A genuinely matched pair - same height, same weight, same pattern - which is not always the case with pieces of this age.

Height 14cm. Pair.
